operation christmas child :: being thankful

My kids love gifts…especially when it’s for themselves. So each year, we make it a point to go to a store and let the kids pick out a bunch of great things that they like and then we give it all to other people! It’s a great reminder that it’s not all about them and it’s not all about getting things. But we are called to give to others too.

Operation Christmas Child is perfect for this. They make it so easy…grab a box, pick a girl or boy, pick an age range and then fill the box with goodies. Done!

Let me just say that this year was complete chaos shopping but we survived it. I think as we put something in the cart, I heard one of the kids say, “Can I get one of those too?”. Of course I wanted to give in because most of it was just $1 but I still said no. This trip was not about my kids. It was about other kids and bringing a little joy to their Christmas this year.

So we did three boxes since we have three little ones in our family. Here is a picture of it all organized ready to go in the boxes (you’re just going to have to trust me that it was chaotic and not this organized as we shopped!)…

A few ideas of things to include in your box (the dollar store is great for most of this):

  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • soap
  • comb/brush
  • washclothe
  • socks
  • crayons
  • coloring book
  • candy
  • toys
  • glow sticks
  • hair bows and bracelets for girls
  • stickers
  • cute bandaids

So today I’m thankful for organizations like Operation Christmas Child that show love to kids around the world. And that we have the privilege of being a part of it.

If you haven’t filled your boxes yet, get it done this weekend! It is worth it.
